Button Willow  March 1&2, 2003

The Huntley Crew had a great time at the first official Porsche Drivers Cup Series event of the year at Buttonwillow Raceway with the TCRA!! A total of 22 cars showed up with 23 drivers!!! The track was cold and damp on Friday when we rented the track to break-in two brand new race cars we built for a couple of our customers. Both cars got off track and made us cry with the thick mud all over our brand new babies or their new babies I mean :) Saturday was a bit hectic while the crew scrambled to tech 18 cars and get the drivers on the track. The first 944 Drivers Cup race drivers headed out for some practice on the technical track. Our team was running a street/strip 951 (Chris Williams car) as a time trailer with Chris and a club racer with Derrek Khajavi, and our HR 916/6 2.0ltr racer (Mighty

Mouse!) driven by Ike Brukman in the 2.2 ltr (or under in our case) challenge race. Due to all the cars being signed up Derrek missed a qualifying session and started the qualifying race dead last while Ike started 1st in class! The race had a WILD start with Derrek getting a tremendous launch on the group only to have his lane closed down by two cars who didn't see the HR built 944 Turbo closing fast from behind!! Derrek had to check the front end for 'rubbin' after the race. He finished 6th from the back of the pack! Tracy Goodenough took the pole for the 944 Drivers cup series with some great rookie driving! Ike had a phenomenal race!! He not only stayed 1st in class, he finished the race 2nd overall!!! This is in a 2.0ltr car up against big turbo and V8 cars!! Ike was on fire with a new 'winter' upgrade or two and a nice set of slicks though banging curbs took it's toll on his front spoiler!! Sunday was a little warmer and we all had some rest which helps!! Ike sat out a few sessions feeling good with his times and the car. Derrek having ONLY the Saturday race for track time went out for session two in order to fine tune the line for the 944 Turbo. With the lap times getting faster and faster the worst thing happened at the worst time! Bye bye brakes!! The tired original fuel injection hoses on Chris's car failed as Derrek exited the fast slalom section which leads to a critical braking zone before a hairpin left hander. Being at full throttle thru the slalom there was no vacuum reserve for the power brakes! There was no stopping the car and off he went into 2' deep mud! No damage was done but without a replacement, the car was done for the weekend ;( Ike however would have the opposite finish to the weekend. Griding up for the club race was a bit surreal, with up in second place overall was our little Mighty Mouse surrounded by turbo and V8 race cars!! We knew the start would be critical as the competition was running much more HP than our 914. The start was a good one with Ike holding position but barely since the slicks which got him there in the first place were now holding him up since they take so long to warm up!! With a hungry crowd of cars on his tail he pushed a little to hard on cold slicks to a dramatic off coming over 'magic mountain'!! He fish-tailed Mighty Mouse for nearly 1/2 mile before succumbing to the inevitable spin! With quick reflexes he was back on track but with 6 cars to pass back! With amazing talent and lots of guts he passed all but one of the cars he had once led despite losing both exhaust pipes! Finishing 1st in class by nearly 1/2 a lap and 3rd overall he proved good things can come in small packages!! One more trophy for the Huntley Crew!!
